Greenbean Scientific

The primary function of packaging is to contain and protect produce through the cool chain, thereby delivering the required condition and quality of commodities with the requisite storage and shelf life. It is also important in terms of traceability, security and marketing.

The choice of packaging is influenced by: the produce item; the length of journey and method of transportation; environmental conditions during handling and distribution; type of handling (e.g. minimal processing, ripening etc.) and whether the product will be re-packed on arrival into retail packaging or will be placed directly on the retailer shelf.

Each fresh fruit and vegetable has its own packaging requirements for temperature, humidity, and environmental gas composition in order to achieve a good shelf life.

We have experience with:

  • Modified atmosphere packaging (passive and active)
  • Moisture regulating products e.g. moisture absorbance pads and films
  • Biodegradable and recyclable films
  • Antimicrobial products (films, labels etc.)
  • Ethylene scavengers
  • Carbon dioxide and oxygen scavengers
  • Time-temperature indicators
  • Freshness indicators
  • Suspended tray packs to reduce mechanical/vibration damage

We can provide the following services:

  • Independent advice on the best packaging solution for specific supply chains in order to maintain product quality and optimise shelf life
